University’s Accommodation Services Awarded for Contribution to Farm Animal Welfare

The University of Edinburgh’s Accommodation Services has been recognised for its commitment to farm animal welfare and supporting producers of free range eggs by being awarded a Good Egg Award from Compassion in World Farming.

The University of Edinburgh’s Accommodation Services switched all shelled eggs to free range over six years ago with the aim of using good, traceable produce so that they could clearly explain to customers exactly where ingredients have come from.

The organisation uses around 285,000 free-range shelled eggs every year and its move to free-range eggs is thought to benefit 1,000 hens.

Ian Macaulay, Assistant Director (Catering), said: “This is yet another great achievement for the business, which was also awarded the Food for Life catering mark in 2012; and is yet further recognition of our commitment to ensuring the highest level of animal welfare in our purchasing activities.

“Our Good Egg Award demonstrates that animal welfare isn’t just the responsibility of large corporations – businesses of all sizes can source produce responsibly.”

Compassion’s Good Animal Welfare Awards recognise food companies across Europe that are making it their policy to produce and source higher welfare eggs, meat and dairy produce.

Compassion has run its flagship scheme, the Good Egg Award, since 2007 to celebrate organisations that source only cage-free eggs.
